NH Recovery Friendly Workplace
The City was welcomed into the Recovery Friendly NH Recovery Friendly Workplace Initiative, the first city to be presented with the Designation certificate in February 2020.
Recovery Friendly Advisor Jeanne Venuti was very moved to learn a little bit more about why the City of Concord decided to participate in the initiative. Jennifer Johnston, HR Director, explained to Jeanne: "On March 28, 2018, a colleague and I attended 'The Real Cost to Business: The Mental Health and Addiction Crisis' where Gov. Sununu presented on the RFW initiative. I, like so many others, have been personally affected by the Substance Use Disorder of a family member. I know the stigma, the difficulty in finding treatment, and in re-entering the workforce. I also know, as an HR Professional, how critical meaningful work is to all employees but especially people in recovery. Having purpose helps to regain the confidence that is lost and counter the shame that those with SUDs often live with. Prior to working for the City of Concord, I worked in logistics and was responsible for employee drug testing. I have experienced first-hand the challenges people have had coming forward to ask for help at their place of work for fear of losing their job and losing the confidence of their employer. I felt that prevented people from seeking help earlier. I wanted to work to remove that barrier. So at the City, we have been providing opportunities for our employees and Supervisors to get educated on Mental Health and SUDs. We have worked with Justice Broderick to talk about stigma, provided Mental Health First Aid courses, brought in our EAP program to talk about Managing Stress, and Riverbend to work with Supervisors on having conversations about Mental Health. We have provided onsite depression and anxiety screenings, we have conducted Ask a Counselor sessions with Riverbend. Our next logical step was to bring in the RFW to provide support to our employees and their families with SUD through training and access to resources and to ensure the workforce knows that we support those in recovery looking for employment."
